CROCHET SKILL LEVEL : INTERMEDIATE
Be ready to welcome your newborn bundle of joy with this cozy cocoon and beanie set. Crochet post stitches are used
to create ribbing and cable patterns. Bobble stitches form the perfect flower petals. It’s ideal for a shower gift!
Directions are for size 0-3 months; changes for 3-6 months are in parentheses.
Cocoon measures 13 (16)” (33 (40.5) cm) in length and 19 (21½)” (48.5 (54.5) cm) in circumference. Beanie measures 6 (6½)” (15 (16.5) cm) in length and 13½ (16)” (34.5 (40.5) cm) in circumference.
NOTES
1. Half double crochet rounds are worked from the wrong side; all other rounds are worked from the right
side.
2. Post stitches are worked in the stitch two rounds below, except in the first 4 rounds (initial ribbing) of each piece.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Bobble: Yo, pull up a loop in indicated st, yo and draw through 2 loops, [yo, pull up a loop in same stitch, yo and
draw through 2 loops] 4 times, yo and draw through all 6 loops on hook.
Bpdc = Back post double crochet: Yo, insert hook from the back of the work to front and to back again around the post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice.
Fpdc = Front post double crochet: Yo, insert hook from the front of the work to back and to front again around the post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice.
Fpdc2tog = Front post double crochet 2 together: * Yo, insert hook from the front of the work to back and to front
again around the post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through 2 loops; repeat from * once more, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Fptr = Front post treble (triple) crochet: Yo twice, insert hook from the front of the work to the back and to front again around the post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), [yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times.
Hdc2tog = Half double crochet 2 together: [Yo, pull up a loop in next st] twice, yo and draw through all 5 loops
on hook.
Sc2tog = Single crochet 2 together: [Pull up a loop in next st] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
COCOON
With A, ch 71 (81).
Round 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end, join round with slip st in first sc – 70 (80) sts.
Rounds 2 and 3: Ch 1, * fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc.
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with slip st in first sc.
Round 5 (wrong side): Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st around, join with slip st in first hdc.
Round 6 (right side): Ch 1, turn, * fpdc around each of next 2 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts, fpdc around each of next 4 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc.
Round 7: Repeat Round 5.
Round 8: Ch 1, turn, * fpdc around each of next 2 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts, skip next 2 post sts 2 rounds below, fptr around each of next 2 post sts 2 rounds below, working in front of sts just made, fptr around 2
skipped sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc.
Rounds 9 and 11: Repeat Round 5.
Round 10 and 12: Repeat Round 6. Next 29 (41) rounds: Repeat Rounds 7-12 4 (6) more times, then repeat rounds 7-11 only once more. Shape Bottom
Next 13 rounds:
Round 1 (right side): Ch 1, turn, * fpdc around each of next 2 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts, [fpdc2tog over next 2 sts 2 rounds below] twice, sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc – 56 (64) sts.
Round 2 (wrong side): Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st around, join with slip st in first hdc.
Round 3: Ch 1, turn, * fpdc2tog over next 2 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc2tog – 42 (48) sts.
Round 4: Repeat Round 2.
Rounds 5 and 7: Ch 1, turn, * fpdc around next st 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc.
Round 6 and 8: Repeat Round 2.
Round 9: Ch 1, turn, * fpdc around next st 2 rounds below, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip
st in first fpdc – 28 (32) sts.
Round 10: Repeat Round 2.
Round 11: Ch 1, turn, * fpdc2tog over next 2 post sts 2 rounds below skipping the sc between them, sc in next st; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc2tog – 14 (16) sts.
Round 12: Repeat Round 2.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use yarn needle to weave tail through each st in the last round, then pull tight to close opening and secure in place.
BEANIE
With A, ch 51 (61).
Round 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end, join round with slip st in first sc – 50 (60) sts.
Round 2: Ch 1, * fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with slip st in first sc.
Round 4 (wrong side): Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st around, join.
Round 5 (right side): Ch 1, turn, * fpdc around each of next 2 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts, fpdc around each of next 4 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc.

Round 3: Ch 1, turn, * fpdc2tog over next 2 sts 2 rounds below, sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip st in first fpdc2tog – 30 (36) sts.
Round 4: Repeat Round 2.
Round 5: Ch 1, turn, * fpdc around next st 2 rounds below, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with slip

Fasten off.
Round 2 (wrong side): Join B with slip st in any hdc, ch 1, sc in same st, bobble in next st, [2 sc in next st, Bobble in next st], repeat around, sc again in first st (where you already have one sc), join with slip st in first sc.
Fasten off. Sew one flower near edge of each piece.
Drawstring (optional)
With B, Ch 150 (160), slip st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end.
Fasten off.
Weave drawstring through round 2 of Cocoon and tie into bow.
FINISHING
Weave in all loose ends, tacking together the small gap in the foundation ch with beginning yarn tail of each piece.
